What is Gastrodin
Gastrodin is the glucoside of 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (Gastrodigenin). It can be isolated from the orchids Gastrodia elata or from the rhizome of Galeola faberi. It can also be produced by biotransformation of 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde by Datura tatula cell cultures.
Gastrodin, an active component of tall gastrodia tuber, is widely used in the treatment of dizziness, paralysis, epilepsy, stroke and dementia, and exhibits a neuroprotective effect. It promotes the secretion of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, contributes to the recovery of neurological function, and protects neural cells against injury.
How Gastrodin Works
The body maintains a delicate balance of neurotransmitters, such as GABA, which is of tremendous importance to healthy brain function. Studies show that alone or in combination the active compounds in Gastrodia help maintain healthy levels of vital neurotransmitters in those whose levels are already within the normal range. It has been repeatedly shown that formulas containing Gastrodin beneficially support normal, healthy levels of brain blood flow in both animals and in humans. The aging brain relies on adequate blood flow to get sufficient oxygen and fuel to retain normal function.
Health Benefits of Gastrodin
Here look at some key findings of Gastrodin as the following:
1) Gastrodin contributes to the recovery of neurological function with spinal cord injury.
2) Gastrodin promotes the secretion of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the injured spinal cord.
3) Gastrodin can maintain a uniform distribution of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the spinal cord tissue, and stabilize the microenvironment following spinal cord injury.
Side Effects of Gastrodin
Individuals with severe conditions should use with caution. It is reported that a very high dosage can lead to headache, hot feeling in face, coma and slow papillary light reflex.
Gastrodin Dosage
Those seeking maximum benefit should consider adding 600 mg of Gastrodin in divided doses (300 mg twice daily) for 30 days. After 30 days, 300 mg of Gastrodin may be sufficient based upon the experience of gastrodin as an over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceutical agent.
